As soon as the legal binding contract was signed, the eviction process would begin.
Recap….Apartment 1 has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. We knew that there was a woman and her 2 teenage children living in this apartment. Apartment 2 had a man and his adult son. Apartment 3 was a single man or maybe he had a girlfriend, Apartment 4 was a single woman and Apartment 5 lived 2 men.
According to the realtors, there were no active leases on any of the apartments. In May, we find out that this is not true. Apartment 1 has an active lease that will expire August 31, 2015.
The end of May 2015 apartment 2, 3 and 5 were vacated. Unit 4 would be vacated within the week and unit 1 was not budging. The owner of the house, which was a corporation was now losing money since most of their renters were gone. The owner had offered $1000 to the woman in apartment 1 to vacate prior to her lease. Every month we would be hopeful for her to leave. We became stalkers. Steve would drive by the house in the morning on the way to work, I would go by at lunchtime and he would drive by again on his way home. I am not sure what we thought this would accomplish.
Ken and Wendy would walk their dog by during the week and text us. “car in the driveway” “People on the porch.”
We also were introduced to our neighbors. Our house had become the black sheep of the neighborhood. Loud parties, trash in the yard, lots of arrests, drugs sold off the front porch…..yeah great place and we actually want to live there. Our neighbors would also text with all the activities that were going on at the house.
There was currently a property manager for the property, his name was Fred. In June, Fred was supposed to deliver papers from the property owner to the tenant in apartment 1 with an offer of eviction prior to the end of her lease. Welllllllllllllllll Fred did not deliver the papers as promised and another month goes by without an eviction.
July offered new news. There had been a break in at the house and when the police came, the tenant in Apartment 1 was hiding in a closet and was then arrested for drug possession. The police also said that there were at least 10 people living in Apartment 1. Mattresses everywhere. In July, the daughter of the tenant also went to jail for drug possession. I began to feel sorry for this family. What addiction does to a family is horrible. During this time, the sellers attorney began eviction proceedings through the court system. Long? Yep. Frustrating? Yep.
In August, the sellers realtor asked if we wanted to go over and look at the house again. It had been months. Yes of course, I would love to. While there, I am able to meet the ex-husband of the tenant who is in jail. Really? Why are you living in my house? Why? Why? Why????????? He said that he had a place to live and would be moving out August 13th. Ok, maybe we are getting somewhere! The weekend of August 13th comes. The neighbors are all sending us pictures of a giant moving truck in the yard. HOLY COW!! They are moving out. Nope. The stayed.
Then one day………we get an email from the sellers realtor. He said “Are you sitting down?” Apartment 1 will be vacant this week and we can close. Closing was set for September 22nd. The long and winding road has ended or has it? I think maybe it has just begun.
