the story of the doors

When we started demolition, we wanted to try and save everything that we could possibly reuse. This was before there was a plan, before walls changed and stairs moved. Before the attic was actually a place to go.

The doors were removed carefully. They were so gross. They were dirty and stinky. Some were damaged even before we started taking them off. However we kept every one that was even remotely useable.

We have come to the time to start gathering up the old and ugly and see what we can actually use.

Steve got his tape measure and I got paper and off we went. To the basement……… yes we have a basement in Florida which is rare. Currently it’s a black hole of nastiness. But it has also been a very valued place to store things that we had no idea where to put. Pull the baseboard off….where does it go? The basement. Remove the doors….where does it go? The basement.

This is a picture of the back of the house.

The deck to the left is off the big house. The deck to the right is Mom and Dad’s. See the little door with a roof over it in between the two decks? Yep you guessed it, the basement.

The only consistency in the doors are they are 4 paneled and they are all dirty. They bring back not so fond memories of what the house used to smell like.

They all however have different knobs. Some all ceramic, some are metal, some are black and some are white. Jesus loves the little children of the world.

As we are pulling the doors out the basement, Steve is measuring and I am writing it on a piece of tape and placing it on each door.

We then head into the house and measure each door frame so we can match a door with an opening.

If you have not read the story about how we got the house and who used to live there, you can read it here The Cinderella Project – Part 1 and here The Cinderella Project – Part 2 and here Cinderella Project – Part III. Each room/apartment had a name. It was the only way to keep track of them.

There was pool table ladies apartment.

There was Christmas Tree guys apartment

There was naked girls room

There was the druggies apartment and of course mean ladies apartment.

Throughout the whole process we have called each room by their names.

Yesterday we are placing the tape on the doors and Steve said “I can’t wait until we can call the rooms different names.” I responded “Yes we can do that however naked girls room will always be naked girls room.”

Steve isn’t excited about a future grand baby at all. He lovingly named one of the rooms “The nursery.”
